Mike will unveil a new series of four bas-relief sculptures as part of the Eugene08 Festival, June 27, 2008 - July 6, 2008.
While world-class athletes compete for a place on the 2008 Olympic Team inside Hayward Field, the Eugene 08 Festival will be the dynamic epicenter for connecting fans to the entire Olympic Trials experience. It will be the focal attraction for spectators before and after each competition session and provide a way for fans without tickets to participate in the event.
Mike will have a large booth at Eugene08 featuring the new bas-relief sculptures made especially for the event. They are based on running, pole-vaulting, long-jumping and hurdling.
He is producing a limited number of each and will offer them for sale at $125 each plus shipping at the booth as well as on his website www.mikeleckie.com.
The Festival will be sponsoring a special "Sport Meets Art" day on Thursday July 3. Mike will be a huge part of it.
The pieces are:
1. "Two-Hundredths of a Second"
This features two female runners, one crossing the finish line a split- second before the other.
13"h x 16"w
2. "Clearing the Bar"
A pole-vaulter in the moment of triumph, in the air as he goes over.
16"h x 13"w
3. "Soft Explosion"
A long-jumper as he lands.
16"h x 13"w
4. "The Last Hurdle"

Mike made these bas-reliefs for the Senior Olympics in Eugene over a decade ago.
MIKE ON BAS RELIEF
"Bas relief are challenging because of the flat background. They are their own particular form of sculpture. They are not easier than full dimension sculpture, just different. I like the process. The process isn't easy. There is a whole series of material and molds that are between the clay sculpture and the final piece in hydrastone."
